1.1. Referencing the translation

We advise readers to cite the translations in this edition, whether they are working from the electronic or the book version, in the following way:

Calendar of the Fine Rolls of the Reign of Henry III [henceforth CFR] 1223–24 (available both on the Henry III Fine Rolls Project's website (http://www.finerollshenry3.org.uk) and within Calendar of the Fine Rolls of the Reign of Henry III 1216–1234, ed. P. Dryburgh and B. Hartland, technical ed. A. Ciula and J.M. Vieira, 2 vols. (Woodbridge, 2007), no. 1) – naturally one only adds the detail of book publication (which is ongoing for the whole reign) where the roll cited has been published. Since the website is being regularly updated with Addenda and Corrigenda, users are strongly recommended to supply the date upon which they accessed the site when they give references: CFR 1219–20, no. 20 (accessed 1 June 2008).

In the above citation, the ‘no. 1’ refers to the entry number and the ‘1223–24’ to the portions of those Christian years covered by the regnal year of the roll, in this case the eighth year of Henry III. 1 The second reference would simply be to CFR 1223–24, no. 1.

Citations from the book version can be the same as those for the electronic since there too each roll has its own numbering. It should be noted, however, that, for reasons of space, references in the indexes both on the web and in the books are to the rolls as defined by their regnal years, so 4/20 refers to entry number twenty in the roll for Henry’s fourth year (1219–1220). The reference for citation would be CFR 1219–20, no. 20.

1.2. Referencing pageless scholarly articles

From Novermber 2008 a new feature has been introduced on the website. Scholarly material in all Fine of the Month articles has been broken down into sections and paragraphs for ease of reference and citation and these should now be cited in the following manner:

Michael Ray, ‘The Lady is not for turning: Margaret de Redvers’ fine not to be compelled to marry’, para. 6 (Fine of the Month, December 2006 – accessed 4 November 2008)
