5 Aug. Westminster. For Cok and Manasser, his brother, Jews of London. Whereas Cok son of Aaron, Jew of London, some time ago made fine with the king for himself and for Manasser, his brother, Jew, for all debts of the aforesaid Aaron and for having all chattels formerly of the same, and whereas Manasser recognised himself before H. Bigod, justiciar of England, to be of full age and by the king’s command had received a moiety of all lands, tenements and chattels formerly of Aaron falling to him, and whereas Manasser had similarly mainperned before the justiciar to answer the king henceforth for a moiety of all debts which Cok owed the king by reason of his father, the king has betaken himself to Manasser for a moiety of all of the aforesaid debts, both for the aforesaid fine and for other debts. Order to the barons of the Exchequer and the justices assigned to the custody of the Jews to discharge Cok from the other moiety of those debts and the aforesaid fine, 1 so that Manasser answers the king for one moiety and Cok for the other at the accustomed terms, 2 and they are to cause this to be done and enrolled thus. Whereas four years ago Cok son of Aaron, Jew of London, made fine with the king for himself and for Manasser, his brother, by 2000 m. of silver, for the lands, houses, rents, debts and chattels formerly of the aforesaid Aaron, his father, excepting those chattels which the Queen wished to take for her gold, both for the aforesaid fine and for the gold if Aaron, their father, owed anything, and excepting the 1000 m. of debts which the king’s beloved brother, R. illustrious king of Germany, wished to choose for himself from the aforesaid chattels in part payment of the debts which the king owed him, and excepting the houses and rents which the king previously gave therefrom to William de Valers’, then valet of Edmund, the king’s son, and to Herman de Budbergh’, the king’s valet, and whereas the king had granted to Cok that he was to render 10 m. of gold per annum at the Exchequer for the aforesaid 2000 m. until the aforesaid 2000 m. had been paid to him, so that neither he nor the aforesaid chattels formerly of his aforesaid father would henceforth be tallaged by reason of the same chattels for as long as the aforesaid fine of 2000 m. remained in force, as is contained in the letters patent drawn up for him concerning this, the king, by the counsel of the magnates that are of his council, at the instance of the aforesaid Cok and Manasser, between whom the lands and chattels of Aaron, their father, have now been shared, has granted them, for the remission that they have made to him of all gold which they had already paid to him of the aforesaid fine of 2000 m. up to this point, and for the 2 m. of gold which they have given him in addition, that they might begin again to pay the aforesaid 2000 m., so that they are to render 50 m. of silver per annum at the Exchequer, namely 25 m. at the Exchequer of Michaelmas next to come, 25 m. at the Exhcequer of Easter next following, and 50 m. thus from year to year at the same terms until the aforesaid 2000 m. have been paid to the king, so that the gold which Cok has paid to the king in time past of the aforesaid fine for himself and his aforesaid brother will not count towards the payment of the same fine, and that neither they not the aforesaid chattels shall henceforth be tallaged by reason of the aforesaid chattels for as long as the aforesaid fine of 2000 m. shall remain in force, saving, however, that Cok and Manasser are to be tallaged together with other Jews for other of their own chattels as shall pertain to them. 4 Sept. Clarendon. For the Jews of Winchester. Because the custody of the king’s Jewry of Winchester had always accustomed to have been in the hands of the sheriffs of Hampshire before the time of John de La Haye, keeper of Winchester castle, and the aforesaid John does not have 1 power to make any distraint outside the gate of the aforesaid castle, and because the king, moreover, has heard divers complaints from his Jews of Winchester concerning several injuries and damages done to them by John’s ministers after he had custody of the aforesaid castle, which the king cannot and ought not tolerate, the king, in order to avert this manner of scandal to his honour and that of the aforesaid John, has committed the custody of his aforesaid Jewry to the sheriff of Hampshire for as long as it pleases the king. Order to the aforesaid John not to concern himself henceforth with that custody in any way and to cause summonses, both for other tallages and other Jewish debts and the king’s writ touching upon that Jewry, to be delivered to the aforesaid sheriff, so that he might answer the king for them at the Exchequer of the Jews. 10 Sept. Ludgershall. Concerning an erroneous sale in the Forest of Dean. Look on the back for the commission of the priory of Montacute. The king is given to understand that by an erroneous and fraudulent sale lately made in the Forest of Dean by the sellers of the king’s woods who have been deputed to this there, the king has sustained serious loss and very many damages, both in the loss of his money by the aforesaid sale and by the distruction of the aforesaid forest, concerning which the king is very much disgusted and disturbed. Wishing therefore to be more fully certified about the foregoing matter and to have the aforesaid damage and injury remedied, the king orders Thomas Grelley, justice of his forest on this side of the Trent, to go to those parts in person and inquire diligently by the oath both of foresters and verderers and of other trustworthy and law-worthy men by whom the truth of the matter might be better known as to who perpetrated that damage and trespass in the aforesaid sale, and by what right and in what manner. Having inquired into the truth of this matter, he is to make due and suitable amends for this to the king’s use, as shall seem most expedient to him at his discretion, so that he might answer for the said amends to the king at his Exchequer. 1
