Walter de Chereville gives the king half a mark for having a pone at Westminster in the octaves of Hilary against John de Chereville, concerning 47 acres of land with appurtenances in Tilney and Wiggenhall. 2 Nov. Westminster. Suffolk. Richard son of Humphrey gives the king half a mark for having a precipe before the justices of the Bench at Hilary in three weeks against Henry of Nacton to render to him a knight’s fee with appurtenances in Livermere. The king has granted the castle of Knaresborough to Brian de Lisle, with the vill of Knaresborough and all its appurtenances, and Boroughbridge with all its appurtenances, to keep for as long as it pleases the king, rendering the ancient farm of £50 per annum to the king at the Exchequer. Roger of Derby has made fine with the king by 20s. for having custody of the land and heir of Nicholas son of John, with the marriage of the same heir, for which he has terms at the Exchequer. Jordan Clerk has also made fine with the king by 20s. for having custody of the land and heir of Thomas Gernet, with the marriage of the same heir, for which he has terms at the Exchequer. Order that, having accepted security from them for rendering the fines to the king, he is to cause them to have full seisin of the custodies with their appurtenances without delay. Richard Walensis has made fine with the king by 40s. for his relief of the land formerly of Richard Walensis, his father, whose heir he is, which Richard ought to hold of the king, for which he has terms at the Exchequer. Adam son of Gilmichel has also made fine with the king by 20s. for his relief of the land formerly of Gilmichel, his father, whose heir he is, which Adam ought to hold of the king, for which he similarly has terms at the Exchequer. Richard son of Henry of Trafford has also made fine with the king by 20s. for his relief of the land formerly of Henry, his father, whose heir he is, which Richard ought to hold of the king, for which he similarly has terms at the Exchequer. Order that, having accepted security from Richard, Adam and Richard for rendering the aforesaid fines to the king, he is to cause them to have full seisin without delay of all lands that they ought to hold from the king in his bailiwick and that are in the king’s hand. The king has taken the homage of Robert, son and heir of Hugh of Shottesbrooke for the knight’s fee in his bailiwick that Hugh held of the king in chief, which falls to Robert by hereditary right. Order that, having accepted security from Robert for 100s. to the king’s use for his relief, he is to cause him to have full seisin. Witness H. etc. By the same.

10 Nov. Westminster. Nottinghamshire. To the sheriff of Nottinghamshire. William de Hardredesfeld’ has made fine with the king by 20 m. for having the vill of Clayworth with appurtenances, which falls to him by hereditary right and for which he has a charter of King Henry, grandfather of the king. He has given the king surety for the aforesaid 20 m. by R. earl of Chester and Lincoln and Falkes de Bréauté, of which he is to render 5 m. at Easter in the sixth year, 5 m. at the Nativity of St. John the Baptist in the same year, 5 m. at Michaelmas in the same year, and 5 m. at Easter in the seventh year. Hugh de Loges has made fine with the king by 5 m. for having custody of the forest of Cannock, which falls to him by hereditary right. Order to the earl of Chester and Lincoln that, having accepted security from Hugh for rendering those 5 m. to the king, he is to cause him to have full seisin. Witness as above. By the same.

Essex. To the sheriff of Essex. Isabella de Bolbec, who was the wife of Robert de Vere, formerly earl of Oxford, has made fine with the king for having custody of the land and heir of the earl and of the son of Isabella until the same heir comes of age. She is to render which fine to the king by her hand at the terms given to her at the Exchequer, and she has given the king surety for one part of that fine by pledge. Order to cause her to have full seisin without delay of all lands that Robert de Vere held in his bailiwick both of his own inheritance and of the inheritance of Isabella, receiving from her the pledges that she is to find for the fine, namely such that are sufficient and good for as much as each of them will be pledge, and he is to cause the king to know openly and distinctly by his sealed letters of the names of those pledges and for how much each of them is pledge. If anything has been removed since he took that land into the king’s hand, he is to cause it to be rendered to her without delay. Witness as above.

Martin son and heir of Gilbert of Peasemore has made fine with the king by 50s. for his relief of half a knight’s fee formerly of Gilbert of Peasemore, his father, in Peasemore, that falls to him by inheritance. Order that, having accepted security from the same for rendering the aforesaid 50s. to the king, he is to cause him to have full seisin of the aforesaid half a knight’s fee. Witness H. etc.

Isabella de Bolbec, countess of Oxford, has made fine with the king, by £2228 2s. 9½d., 1 for having custody of the land and her son, the heir of Robert de Vere, formerly earl of Oxford, her husband, so that, beyond that fine, she will answer the king at the Exchequer for £1778 11s. of the debt that the earl owed to the king for several debts. She is also to render 250 m. of the aforesaid monies at Hilary in the sixth year, 250 m. at Easter in the same year, 250 m. at the Nativity of St. John the Baptist in the same year, 250 m. at Michaelmas in the same year, and £400 in the following year at the terms aforesaid, and £400 from year to year by the same terms until the aforesaid fine and debt have been paid in full.

14 Nov. Westminster. Dorchester. To the sheriff of Dorset. The king has granted to his burgesses of Dorchester that they may have the king’s borough of Dorchester with appurtenances by the same farm that they were accustomed to render in the time of King John, father of the king, namely so that they may henceforth answer the king for that farm by their hand at the Exchequer. Order to cause them to have full seisin without delay. Witness H. etc. Per annum from the sixth year.

17 Nov. Westminster. Hampshire. To the sheriff of Hampshire. Order that, having convoked the king’s citizens of Winchester, he is to hand over the king’s city of Winchester to them, so they answer the king for the farm of the same city by their hands at the Exchequer, as they were accustomed to answer in the time of King John, the king’s father. He is to say to them on the king’s behalf that they are to receive it in such a way and so behave themselves that the king will have no loss, and whatever is to be allowed to them when they come to the Exchequer for their account, the king will cause them to be allowed this by the consideration of the barons of the Exchequer and other faithful men. The abbot of Muchelney and Roger de Reimes have made fine with the king, by 200 m., in the name of all men of the counties of Dorset and Somerset, for having Roger of Ford as sheriff of Dorset and Somerset for as long as it pleases the king, so that henceforth they answer or are intendant to Peter de Maulay or his bailiffs in nothing. They are to render 50 m. of this at Easter in the sixth year, 50 m. at the Nativity of St. John the Baptist in the same year, 50 m. at Michaelmas in the same year, and 50 m. at Christmas in the seventh year.

The king has granted to Olenta, who was the wife of Walter de Rodes the land with appurtenances in Broom that Walter held of the king, to be held at farm for as long as it pleases the king, so that she renders 40s. at the Exchequer each year, namely 20s. at the Exchequer of Michaelmas and 20s. at the Exchequer of Easter. The king has granted his vill of Bath to the prior of Bath to have at farm for as long as it pleases the king, so that he answers the king then for that farm at the Exchequer by his hand, namely for £30 per annum. The king has reduced the fine of £100 per annum that Deu le Beneye and his brothers, Jews, heirs of Chera the Jewess of Winchester, Benedict Crispin and Aaron and Samson, sons and heirs of Isaac the chirographer, made with the king for the debts that Isaac the chirographer and Chera the Jewess owed the king, to 100 m. per annum, to be rendered to the king from the morrow of the Conception of the Blessed Mary in the sixth year, 1 so that they are to pay a moiety at Easter 2 and the other moiety at Michaelmas. 3 Order to cause that fine to be enrolled thus in the rolls that are in their custody. Because Andrew has given the king surety by Stephen of Seagrave and Robert Aguillon to answer the king for the value of the corn and the other aforesaid chattels whenever the king orders and wishes, order to cause his corn and chattels taken into the king’s hand to be valued by trustworthy and law-worthy men of the same vill and to cause their values to be enrolled in their rolls, and then to cause all chattels, both money and others of his things, to be delivered without delay to Henry de St. Quentin or Simon de Melclee, men of the same Andrew bearing these letters, so that Andrew is able to answer for their value whenever the king wishes and orders, as aforesaid, retaining in prison those who were taken for this reason and detained in prison, and they are to hear that plea at the pleas of the king’s forest and cause the truth to be inquired. Order that, having taken with himself two law-worthy and discreet men of his county, he is without delay to go in person to the manor of Somerton and, by the view of the same men, take into the king’s hand the twelve librates of land that Godfrey of Crowcombe holds in that vill, together with the issues then arising from the aforesaid day and the stock and new corn which Godfrey received therein, saving to him the rest of his chattels. If he will wish to sell any of them at a reasonable bargain, the sheriff, by Godfrey’s consent, is to retain them for the king’s use. The king will allow him their value at the Exchequer. The king has inspected a charter of King John, his father, by which his father gave and granted the manor of Fawsley with its appurtenances to Hugh Russell, who was to render £15 to the king per annum by the hand of the sheriff of Northamptonshire at two terms, for as long as he renders the farm well, as is more fully contained in the charter of the same Hugh which he has. Order to cause Hugh to have full seisin of the aforesaid manor with its appurtenances without delay. The sheriff had taken the manor into the king’s hand by reason of the king’s order that he made to him for taking all demesne lands and escheats into the king’s hand. Order to the sheriff of Nottinghamshire to take into the king’s hand the land that Juliana, daughter of Hubert son of Ralph, who is dead, held of the king in chief in his bailiwick, the marriage of whose son and heir Phillip Marc has of the king’s gift. He is also to keep the aforesaid land safely, so that nothing is removed until the king orders otherwise. He is to inquire diligently how much land Juliana held of the king in chief in his bailiwick, and by what service, and who her nearest heir is.
